My friend has a Windows XP based laptop so provided it has a firewire I suppose the best, and only option, is to try both my camcorder on his and his on mine. I'll post back when I have had the chance to test but it may not be for a few days. Anyway plugged it in and confirmed new hardware installed, Shut down, connected original 6 pin firewire cable to PC and 4 pin to camcorder before booting up.

Switched on camcorder and lo and behold Windows found the camcorder correctly. So it looks as if the laptop Toshiba PT less than 2 years old is the culprit. Could be I fried the firewire as you suggested, but could also be that the firewire was faulty beforehand as I've never used it before. I have insurance on it with PC World so think I will see what they say. Won't volunteer too much info unless asked.

I'm having exactly the same problem - and just did a search to see if anyone else had got a solution. The camera used to work fine on my vista desk top using a 4pin to 6 pin.

Hi Not sure if this holds true for Vista as it does with Windows 7, however on Windows 7 some fire-wire camcorders are not recognised correctly until you go into device manager and change the fire-wire driver to the "Legacy" option by selecting the driver from a list of drivers rather than an automatic search.

Regards Phil. Just to follow up my previous post I bought another DV cable which works. This time from a shop! It wasn't very expensive - but a few more pounds than I paid on ebay.
