The immense impact that processing grief can have has been very clear. We received funding for a new Toyota Hiace Mini Bus to help transport those of our beneficiaries who had previously been excluded from our programmes, due to transport.

The vehicle is also busy from 7am — 6pm daily, transporting porridge to our Neighbourhood Learning Programmes, Early Learning facilitators to training,…. As we jump right into the new year, we have many goals, hopes, and dreams for what the rest of the year may hold — goals to make an even greater impact than last year, hopes to overcome any and every challenge we may encounter, and dreams to do what it….

Our After-school participants had a fun and memorable trip to Scottburgh Beach. They got to learn how sand is formed, see how waves take shape and affect the coastline, as to observe how fossils become trapped in rocks. Then, they were more than happy to round the day off…. Tables were set up showcasing various foods, art, and attire from different cultures around the world. Children even joined in and performed cultural dances and songs!

By learning more than one language children are able to switch between languages, helping them develop a more flexible approach to problem-solving.

We had over 50 volunteers join us this Mandela Day and they have done an incredible job painting our ECD building and playground!

In order to understand the value of the work we do at Thanda, we have a team dedicated to Monitoring and Evaluation. Skating is a sport that teaches you not to compete against others, but against yourself. It encourages children to set goals, discover the importance of practice and that the only person to be better than, is yourself. I come to Thanda on weekends to practice…. Every day at Thanda is a busy day. Mornings are filled with children and our Thanda Team arriving.

Little ECD participants settle into their classrooms to learn, and the After-school facilitators prepare for their classes. The Organic Farming Team travels to their farms and the farmers water their crops…. Our Fun Foundations Volunteers lead playgroups at our farms to ensure that children are receiving age-appropriate stimulation while their guardians are hard at work!

Every week, the volunteers come to our Community Center to design educational resources for their playgroups by using cereal boxes and bread bags to make ropes,…. Our Agri-Hub opened at the beginning of , serving as a resource and a meeting place for farmers where they can receive assistance, rent equipment. We helped the Ndunge community renovate an old hall, where we now have two ECD classes.

Before, this area had no early learning programs, as most were too far away for children to attend. Now, children in the…. We typically start the year with Hero Books because it evolves and grows with grade levels. Participants from Grade 4 went more in-depth to The Heroes Journey discussing movies, stories, and heroes in their own lives. We hosted over farmers for a Farmers Meeting at our Agri-Hub, a resource for our farmers and staff to learn, grow, and be inspired. Last year, we built five playgrounds at primary schools in our community and are looking forward to…. Sosukwane sells the eggs each day and uses the money for their gardening projects. The picture below is of a new chicken project started recently by Thanda graduates. They have started their own business raising and selling chickens, making them one of the very few enterprises in the community.

This is what Thanda is all about: giving the children and the community the tools and the knowledge they need to go out and start making positive changes in their lives and in the community. Thanda has changed the lives of Umthwalume residents in a positive way.
